Description

Civic infrastructure’s assessment and maintenance plays a critical role in overall infrastructural growth and development.  Some of the traditional inspection methods such as a chain drag, and half cell potentials are used in this regards.  Other high speed technologies such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), infrared thermography, and scanning impact echo have also been used.  However, such prior art methods/technologies are associated with potential limitations such as being slow, requiring traffic closures, and covering insufficient data.  This novel approach enables the development and use of a roaming mobile sensor based system for timely and efficient assessment of the infrastructural related issues.

The sensor system:

•Is simple and inexpensive

•Enables the data collection through sensors using acoustic surface waves, ground penetrating/wave surface radar, and/or video images

•Collects the data on the condition of roads and bridge decks, and identifies/maps defects

•Allows for the pattern recognition and classification of data to eliminate false positive results

•Provides accurate and up to date information without stopping traffic

•Eliminates the need for dangerous and expensive work zones

•Improves the safety both for the driving public as well as for the inspection personnel
