Technology Overview
The proposed invention describes a method for preparing, fabricating and operating materials for electrochemical regeneration. Saturated granular activated carbon is “self-cleaned” by an electrochemical regeneration approach based on in situ H2O2 electrogeneration and activation without any addition of chemicals.
Ti/mixed metal oxides (MMO) mesh is used as anode materials, and granular activated carbon is used as cathode materials, thus avoiding oxidative changes.The composite electrode is used as an integrated cathode in the “self-cleaning” electrochemical regeneration process.
The regeneration of saturated activated carbon is operated in the same reactor without addition of H2O2 and Fe2+. Constant DC current is provided to initiate the regeneration process.
 
Benefits
- It can be operated under mild conditions and causes the in situ cracking of organics.
- No H2O2 or Fe2+ is required.
- Compared with microwave treatment, the process does not require complex microwave generator and high energy consumption.
- Compared with conventional electrochemical regeneration where granular activated carbon is put between anode and cathode, granular activated carbon is used as cathode (negatively polarized), thus avoiding the oxidative changes.

- Can achieve the “self-cleaning” electrochemical regeneration of organics-saturated granular activated carbon.
- Can be used for organic contaminants adsorption and in situ degradation.
