Background
The proposed invention embraces “single point mooring”, which allows for weathervane yawing of the entire turbine structure. The novel approach in this technique is that the mooring has a minimum number of cables and anchoring requirements with the added feature of a controlled mooring force direction. Additionally, a synthetic mooring rope is attached near the rotor axis to reduce tower strength requirements and increase stability.
 
Technology Overview
This invention proposes a novel material and features which are deviations from the standard wind turbine configuration. Key elements of this wind turbine configuration include:
- The turbine floats
- Very shallow draft, e.g. 2m – 4m, permitting assembly at a shallow port
- It can yaw at its mooring to face the wind, driven either by the wind or other means
- The mooring connection consists of a single cable, or other device making the restraint force act in a defined direction
- The restraint force from a mooring is directed to intersect the wind force and system weight at a single point. This means that changes in wind exert no pitching moments about this point and the barge/turbine assembly does not pitch under loading
- A belt drive or rope drive costs far less than a gearbox and is overload tolerant. With this system, there would be no maintenance needs at the rotor shaft. The stainless belt offers advantages compared to other materials and configurations
